To be fair, "even if it's not the most likely outcome, the likelihood has increased" isn't the same as saying "every positive outcome claimed by boosters is likely accurate."

The next James Bond will be younger than me. That's the one that gets me, personally.

Regulation might be a bad idea for other reasons but I mean we can have rules about things without inevitably falling down a slippery slope.

I was making an analogy. If we can regulate publishing for hundreds of years without tipping into government controlling ideological content of books, I don’t see why we couldn’t regulate AI training without tipping into government controlling ideological content of AI systems.

You might be right about the 1st amendment but I think that’s a different argument?
January 26, 2026 at 12:27 AM
I think you were arguing that if we regulated AI training it might lead to government restricting what information can go into AI based on ideology? I was saying it’s possible to have regulation on intellectual property without an inevitable slippery slope, because we have that in other arenas.

How is this different than arguing that “Printing novels you for which you don’t hold the copyright has to be legal, otherwise the government might start dictating what sort of ideas can be books you’re allowed to print?”

I know. I live here too.

Look, I don’t know what you think, but the original post I was responded to said the way the person was complaining was a slap in the face, they were on a “high horse,” and that Americans were just as upset as they are. I’d say I’m characterizing their sentiment pretty accurately!
January 21, 2026 at 5:38 AM
Sigh. Ok then I guess you’re right. We here in the US are just as upset about the threat of our country invading others as the people who live in other countries and have to worry about actually being invaded by us. They owe us an apology, really, don’t you think?
January 21, 2026 at 5:19 AM
Well you maybe aren’t but the person initially responded to literally was doing just that.

I dunno. If someone from Greenland complains maybe we ought to have the grace to let them do it instead of complaining that they’re complaining in the wrong way.
January 21, 2026 at 4:35 AM
Well first of all as a lover of typography I approve of anyone who knows what an em dash is. Secondly I live in the US too. Thirdly if we’re talking about Greenland being invaded and who’s most upset about that *particular* thing the answer is, I’m pretty sure, is folks in Greenland.
January 21, 2026 at 4:25 AM
I live in the US. Just because someone’s not mean and barbaric doesn’t mean they’re just as upset about a possible invasion as the people who actually live in the place that might get invaded.
January 21, 2026 at 12:45 AM
You really think you or I are just as upset as someone who actually lives in the place that might get invaded? I’m pretty sure they’re more upset than we are.

For years a one-bit version of this image was the startup screen on my old monochrome Mac.
