Horror writer from Scotland. I talk about the importance of books, my love of short stories, and whatever fluff needs out my head.
Realising that the reason my social media reach is dropping off a cliff is the result of refusing to get involved in arguments and not being drawn into issues that I don't really care about.

I love the wee corner of the internet that I'm carving for myself. A place where short stories rule.

I'm opening up for submissions in the new year for themed anthologies. Shove yer name in the widget thingy here - https://f.mtr.cool/opchdvfygy to keep track of what we're up to.

The themes? Things that scare the crap out of me.

I don't like seeing how some people treat short stories, like they're only good for being a learning ground before they 'graduate' to novels. They are very different mediums. Yes, writers can learn a lot from them, but to me, it's very obvious who takes them seriously as an artform unto themselves.

Growing my collection of old, out of print anthologies... There's just something about finding an old book that's hard to find. These stories deserve to be kept alive.

Who do you wish was restored and revived?

I've been so impressed by the stories I've accepted so for for publication in our first season of horror stories that'll go live early '26. I need more though. Do you have a haunting tale you can send me?

Losing myself down the rabbit hole of how UK copyright law works for restoring old works where the author has passed away and their literary executor is impossible to find. It makes for some fun midnight reading.

Question for my short story lovers - does a collection or an anthology work better when it has a theme? Or do you care?

Making it my goal to amplify all the awesome short horror stories that don't get the attention they deserve. That's why I opened https://f.mtr.cool/xdxyrqcimw

What short stories have you read lately that have blown you away? What should I check out?

Got a horror story that needs a home? Send it our way. We're excited to be a new voice in the horror game, giving another avenue to short stories worth talking about.

As we accept more and more stories, I realise I've had a lot that are haunting and creepy but only a couple that are nightmare-material. If you have a sick tale, send it my way. Feel deets on the site. Any Qs, pop me a message.

I've seen so many posts talking about readers being on 'reading slumps' and putting pressure on themselves, questioning who they are, etc.

Maybe just chill out, take a break, do something else. If you love books, you'll come back to them. If you don't, then you don't. Either way is fine.

True words from Tim Waggoner on the importance of horror (and giving us weirdos a place).

I think about this one a lot from Mark Manson. We shouldn't get annoyed with ourselves when [insert passion] doesn't do what it once did. It's up to us whether we change or push through, but this is natural.

Can a sentence be both motivational and absolutely terrifying at the same time?

Really enjoying going through this selection of short stories. Always great finding new voices. Even if they scare me shitless.

Just read O Henry’s ‘The Cop and the Anthem’ for the first time. That man knew how to pen a tale! What a story, if you want to check it out. O Henry knew something about hope and homelessness.

Argentinian horror is where it's at. Some of the best short fiction is coming from there. It's unbelievable.

I'm spending far too long on YouTube in the guise of productivity and learning. I need to stop. It's really getting in the way.

Any tips for switching off the pull of YouTube or social media in general?

PS - I fully understand the contradiction in the location of this post...
