the Data-ass way my husband just called me a dummy: "you have a way of undermining all functionality"
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I never made that connection haha. thank you
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
you can definitely tell Picard changed showrunners three times in three seasons, it seemed slightly chaotic behind the scenes. especially making season 2 during covid
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
CBS extended the first season order while they were in production. it really seems like season 1 was originally going to conclude with the cliffhanger at the end of "What's Past Is Prologue". then they used those 2 additional episodes to pivot 🤷‍♂️

Discovery s1 rewatch complete. gripes and shrug of an ending to the big war storyline aside, this season held up surprisingly well for me. lots of fun new toys and SMG nails Michael (who I always thought was severely underwritten) right from the start. it's a shame we were so hard on this show

I thought I was the only sicko who rewatches a trailer more than the actual movie... masterful use of M83 "Outro"

I loved my rewatch of the first half of DIS s1

then the Mirror Universe half hits and we get several catastrophically bad developments: Tyler murders Culber and assaults Burnham (the show forgives him), Georgiou returns as a genocidal Emperor (show forgives her), Lorca is revealed to be evil, dies
Georgiou is back and evil as hell, but Michelle Yeoh is awesome and the writers regretted killing her character so soon, so we get the antithesis of everything that made Captain Georgiou so great. The writers love that shit so much she continues to recur and gets her own TV movie. Michelle Yeoh actually makes it work, but ooof

nobody remembers "Similitude" like they do "Tuvix". "Tuvix" is singularly iconic and fucked, "Similitude" is a pale imitation

distilled down into a sublime 5 minutes

I love M83 plus Star Trek

Netflix First Look Teaser (featuring "My Tears Are Becoming a Sea" by M83) for STAR TREK: DISCOVERY (2017)

I guess I mean the bugs could've played the exact same role the Changelings do in s3 *and* been an opportunity to tie back into an old, unresolved TNG storyline. extra nostalgia for PIC s3's nostalgia overdrive
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I can see it. I always thought the Romulans were the real big bads of TNG, not the Borg. plus there were lingering threads from PIC s1 that could've been explored. oh and there's that opportunity for emotional payoff with Sela
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
there's a lot of fun build up and atmosphere, but yeah can't get past how ugly that last act is
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
they could've at least done something meaningful with the Borg. maybe give Picard and the Borg Queen some time to hash out their shit before blowing her up? idk
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
sorry! old wounds, I know
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
I never rewatch "Conspiracy" because it's so gross, but it auto-played tonight and it's actually good(?)
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
kind of baffles me they didn't use the "Conspiracy" bugs in PIC s3, the Changelings have zero to do with TNG and their storyline was completely wrapped up. those bugs are still out there

doing a Discovery rewatch myself, it's still Starfleet but it's trying to take the personal approach and I'm finding it so refreshing... 8 years later

I forgot about DIS s3! loved that first half without the Federation and Starfleet, that wild west vibe was super promising
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
lots of talk in PIC s1 & 3 about how Picard's way isn't always the right way and not everyone belongs in Starfleet. Jack says it explicitly, Seven's arc proves it, and they both end up joining up, doing the Starfleet thing. imo it's season 3's worst betrayal of Star Trek: Picard's as a unique series

We hear so little about those who aren’t in Starfleet it makes me think that the Federation has mandatory conscription and is a military state.
paulsutherlin.bsky.social
this is why I love the beautiful mess that is Star Trek: Picard season 1

Controversial Star Trek opinion:

A flawed Trek series trying to do something new is far more interesting than a Trek series that’s just trying to be as traditional as possible.

For a franchise about going “where no one has gone before”, a lot of people only want to go where we’ve already been.

Controversial Star Trek opinion:

Starfleet as a vehicle for storytelling is played out

The franchise hints at Starfleet not being so virtuous, then has its characters drink the Kool-Aid anyway. DS9, PIC s1-2, PRO scratched the surface of stories about every day people, there's way more to tell
