A few years ago, a friend of ours gave us a wonderful phrase: “An adventure is just a disaster you survive.” Today we had planned to fly from Santa Barbara to Santa Fe, and instead we flew from LA to Albuquerque. But we made it in time for our dinner reservation, so I declare it an adventure.

Many new engineering managers are surprised to discover that managing up effectively requires good protocols for sharing information asynchronously. If your only method of keeping your boss informed is synchronous, you're going to be in trouble real quick.
