I hear that it is not required that the speaker of the house be the one doing the swearing. It is just traditionn -- a norm. If so, it is well nigh time to break with tradition.

Great if true. Could just be Trump trying to make it true merely by saying it. Some call that lying.

Of course that's what it is all about. And, most importantly, we can't wait until it happens to object to it. By then it will be too late. We have to accuse him of it now in order to have any chance of preventing it. Trump is way, way beyond receiving any benefit of the doubt.

Time to refresh yourselves on Apple's "butthole astronomer" episode. If you don't know it, look it up. It will delight.

We all should always think it is our own fault first but all signs point to this one not being our fault, either individually or together.

And I'll keep doing it until you all pay me ... a million dollars. LOL

Still down for me, homepage and the newsletter link.

Just going with the conspiratorial nature of our time. BTW, it's still down.

The whole Atlantic site appears to be down. Coincidence?

Having troops stationed at polling places is so dangerous to democracy I think we are justified in accusing Trump right now of trying to unfairly influence future elections. Make him prove we're wrong. SCOTUS can give him the benefit of the doubt but we're way past that.

Even higher. Who is going to stop it? The Supreme Court seems dedicated to ignoring reality and giving the benefit of the doubt to some mythical fair-minded normal president. The question we must address is how we can get people to vote because of the troops not in spite of them.

How could anyone abstain from such a decision?

Not only is it telling Bondi won't say no to this question, but it is also interesting that the administration hasn't simply destroyed the incriminating evidence. I guess it means that too many people know of its existence and that they aren't absolutely sure of their fealty to Trump.

If the tradition was turned into law so long ago, why mention "tradition" now? Come on WaPo, stop the pandering!
paultopping.bsky.social
Why bother? They would just lie that circumstances demand it.

If Trump doesn't want to roll back emergency treatment for undocumented immigrants, it's only because he fears it would be unpopular. He'll try it if he successfully implements less horrendous measures or if he gains enough power that unpopularity no longer matters.

I can understand the need to skim which, of course, increases the chances of misreading, but if one is going to reply, a close read of the OP first is an absolute requirement. Still, mistakes are made and are very embarrassing. Or should be anyway.

Seems like an expression of how confused this major news organization is about its future direction. "Ms. Weiss, what do you think we should do?"?
paultopping.bsky.social
Exactly! Seemed very clear to me. Was it "enshrining" that threw them off?
paultopping.bsky.social
And to steal the midterm elections.

In fact, no epithet can have any effect now that voters hear them all every day from both parties. It's a big problem for politicians and the media.

Can we say we are living under the threat of fascism? How about "incipient fascism"?
paultopping.bsky.social
I don't think they care. They all want to live like kings and queens and enjoy the subjugation of the people.
