From 1570-1575, a Spanish conquistador, Francisco Hernández, carried out investigations in Mexico and 'discovered' the use of Ololiuqui (morning glory) by the Aztecs. Spaniards then banned morning glory use and declared that vines should be burned/destroyed on sight.

In 1496, Friar Ramon Pane, who came with Columbus on his second journey, recorded that the Taino people of Haiti/Dominican Republic would consume a psychoactive snuff called cohoba/yopo. The snuff was made from a shrub which contained DMT and 5-MeO-DMT.

The earliest signification of potential Ayahusca use originates from a shaman's pouch in Bolivia which dates back to ~1000CE. The pouch contained bufotenine, DMT, harmine, and cocaine, along with a snuffing tube. Harmine would have allowed the DMT to be orally active.

At Teotihuacan, a famous religious and archaeological site in Mexico, a large mural depicting morning glory vines was found. This mural dates back to ~500CE and provides further evidence that morning glory was used ritualistically.

The next evidence of psilocybin use is located in a cave near Villar de Humo, Spain. This painting is a series of mushrooms on the wall, which researchers suspect are Psilocybe hispanica. This is the earliest indication of mushroom use in Europe, dating back to ~4000BCE.
