Why “rooted”? Translating human rights locally matters now more than ever. Local history may help defang opponents’ “foreignness” claims. E.g., we draw on pre-colonial cave paintings to show queer presence long before colonial laws. (3/3)

Key takeaway: rooted messages are one way to talk about LGBTQI people in hard contexts. An indigeneity frame reduced hostility toward LGBTQ neighbors; a liberation frame nudged support for equal rights. Movement without backlash is important where LGBTQI people have low visibility. (2/3)
