Thank you for being so responsive! I started doing some work with the tutorial notebooks in Datalab yesterday, and the only problems I'm having so far are those of my own making. #:')

Ooohhh -- thanks for the reminder to make grilled cheese this afternoon with rye bread and gouda (soaked in butter, as I cook in French).

Can't even listen to it; I'll never understand how his minions could stomach that weird, non-human set of what aliens might call emotions, but we humans certainly don't.

The their kids not only absorb some of that understanding, but also the passion for that field as well. Two great factors that probably often influence good science fair projects! #;)

It did occur to me after writing that reply to you, that there are families of famous scientists and musicians, as two examples of areas where two or even three generations excel in some particular field. It may be the environment at home, if one or both parents are specialists in certain areas...

Maybe she's like someone who just can't stand it any longer and has to spill the beans, even if it gets her in trouble. Maybe she has, buried deep within the cells that masquerade as neurons, a tiny bunch of them called a conscience, as opposed to that collection of cells, hastily thrown together...

That ISEF takes 9th graders, as DVSF always sent three of them each year. But you need a really strong local program that's well funded, and that's not a universal thing, sadly!!
December 17, 2025 at 8:52 PM
So DVSF is pretty unusual. They have four fairs, for each grade from 9th to 12th. This gives younger kids a chance to go to ISEF. I guess they're pretty well funded, because it's basically an all expenses paid "science fair / vacation" for a week at whatever city it's being held at. From that it's..
December 17, 2025 at 8:51 PM
As a former judge, it's pretty obvious when a kid was totally on their own, because they can explain absolutely everything to you, from original thoughts to construction / experiments, to what went wrong, etc. At least at the level of local fairs which are connected with ISEF.
December 17, 2025 at 8:49 PM
I've judged since 2001, multiple fairs in one year sometimes, and I can't think of any evidence of a truly negative experience. But maybe because I was always pretty positive about finding whatever I could in a project to support them on, and encourage further or deeper work on that project.
December 17, 2025 at 8:46 PM
Did you ever go to the Westinghouse sponsored fair at the Franklin Institute?? (If I've got the history correct). I loved my HS but they had no connection with science fair, and that's the one thing I fault them for. Maybe only Central had kids going?
December 17, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Like in the Nurenburg Trials, "I was just doing what they told me" isn't going to fly when the regime changes back to a real administration...
December 17, 2025 at 7:26 PM
Is your school connected so that eventually kids could get to ISEF? At DVSF they had a separate fair for 9th graders, who every year went to ISEF. The careers of those kids take off like the proverbial rocketship to outerspace. #:')

So glad you liked it! The Seekers have a huge treasure trove of recordings that surely are not widely known. I have a five CD set of their early recordings, mostly focusing on folk songs. But obviously they did later recordings that are also very much worth a listen! #:')

Thanks for responding! There is still a message about Datalab being down, but I am still logged in according my status. Do you know if Datalab is now fully functional, or might I be getting an old message, and maybe need to log out and log back in again? Thanks for any insight you have on this!!
