you either shoot to kill or don't shoot at all, you cannot be sure that a "disabling shot" will hit at all, actually disable them in the way you intend, or inadvertently kill them.

I think part of the reason why we're here is that we're always finding ways like this to talk ourselves into accepting things like this. "It's fine if we just adjusted it a little...it was a bad idea but there's a kernel of merit to it..."
