So will he face any consequences? Doctors get manslaughter charges. I don’t think it’s over the top to suggest he should spend life in prison for the humanitarian and economic costs to the country due to him pursuing self interest over that of the country.

I’m actually not sure that’s true. In a placebo controlled trial (doi.org/10.1038/s415...) semeglutide group lost 15.2% body weight versus 2.6% placebo. I’d argue we want people to have to “change” because we feel they are demonstrating a moral failing. Why shouldn’t a drug simply treat obesity?
Two-year effects of semaglutide in adults with overweight or obesity: the STEP 5 trial - Nature Medicine
Results from the STEP 5 trial, testing semaglutide as an adjunct to behavioral interventions in adults with overweight or obesity, demonstrate sustained weight loss over a period of 104 weeks.

This critique would surely be true of all life extending treatments? Much cheaper to let a child die of measles than to fund a lifetime of their healthcare?

But I do think the focus on it not working this way to criticise the drug is a bit overdone when it would be atypical of a drug to continue its effects after stopping taking it, even if there was felt to be a common sense mechanism where it might achieve it.

Not an unreasonable expectation/assumption. The fact that this isn’t the case is testament to the underlying complexity of weight management in the body. It does seem that the body tries to maintain a certain weight. Which in my experience tends to calibrate to the heaviest weight I’ve been.

Fair point. I think the stigma comes from a similar place - people not being able to understand that we all experience and process life differently. I think people like to think the experience is the same and therefore the inability to cope (for want of a better word) is due to a lack of effort.

I’m not so sure. I’ve never heard this said about antipsychotics or even antidepressants? I think it’s that we’re culturally stuck with the view that obesity is a moral failing and that’s due to greed. Forgetting the food environment in which we live and the complex homeostatic mechanisms at play.

Also, it’s true of drugs in general that they stop working when they stop being taken. Not sure why this is such a fascination of drugs treating those live with obesity and not, say, hypertension.
