Yeah, fair. Jimenez reminds me of some of the weirdo authors playing around with myth and alt history in that period more than the 80s/90s commercial stuff.

I need to give West a second try. I liked the bit of the book I tried, just got distracted.

I'd put She Who Became The Sun and The Spear Cuts Through Water in a similar category for length and well writteness. Latter even has some of the atmosphere.

But yeah, sadly rare.

Not a million miles away from my thoughts on it, although I was a lot more frustrated with the showing seams and missed potential.

Does read wonderfully though. Prose was great.

From the writing perspective... tougher. I find a lot of writers beat readers over the head with their themes to ensure they're understood, which I dislike... but I know full well how easy it is to be misunderstood.

Finding that sweet spot in between is hard.

Reviewer hat on, rhino skin answer is they should have been clearer.

Writer hat, rhino skin answer is it's inevitable and the trick is to focus on the people who do get it.

I don't have rhino skin, so as a reviewer I try to be generous and questioning. If my experience doesn't get it, I say why.
