Feeling the cold?
The furry Fox Moth caterpillar is well prepared for hibernation, before emerging again in the early spring sunshine then pupating in April. It’s seen in a range of habitats including peatland and is named after the reddish colour of the male moth.

Peatland restoration on the site before the mosses and vegetation green up the scenery in spring.

Julie James MS – who in 2022 as Minister for Climate Change announced Welsh Gov’s aim to triple peatland restoration – today reviewed restoration at Llyn Llech Owain, delivered in partnership with @carmscouncil.bsky.social and funded via National Peatland Action Programme @natreswales.bsky.social.

A rarity!
Austin’s Bog Moss at Gors Goch.
Sphagnum austinii is found in undisturbed sites in raised and blanket bog. Of significant conservation concern across Europe, in Wales it's know at only two peatland sites.
Thanks to @natreswales.bsky.social's Dave Reed for the photo.

Migwyn prin!
Migwyn Austinar Gors Goch.
Mae Sphagnum austinii yn fwsogl a geir mewn llecynnau heb darfu arnynt ar orgorsydd a chyforgorsydd. Mae o bryder cadwraeth ledled Ewrop. Yng Nghymru ceir dim ond ar ddau safle mawndir.
Diolch i Dave Reed @natreswales.bsky.social am y llun.

What joy in today’s team meeting as Andrea relayed spotting a red-listed Rosy Marsh Moth – and taking a quick snap. Its survival is a mark of the successful restoration at Cors Fochno and Caron, as it thrives on bog myrtle which grows on wet peatland.

Am gyffro yn y cyfarfod tîm wrth i Andrea adrodd ar weld Gwrid y Gors ddoe - a bachu llun sydyn ohono. Mae goroesiad y gwyfyn yn arwydd o lwyddiant y gwaith adfer ar gorsydd Fochno a Caron gan ei fod yn dibynnu ar ffyniant Helygen Fair a dyf ar mawndir gwlyb.

Worried by the heat?
The worry for bog folk is for creatures that thrive in wetness… like this leech!
Leeches are hermaphrodites, with both male & female reproductive organs. Predatory or parasitic carnivores, only 1 of UK’s 17 species, is known to feed on human blood: the medicinal leech.

Gofidio am y gwres?
Gofid ar y gors yw am greaduriaid sy’n ffynnu ar wlypni…megis gelen!
Mae gelen yn ddeuryw, gydag organau atgenhedlu gwrywaidd a benywaidd. Yn gigysydd ysglyfaethus neu barasitig, dim ond 1 o 17 rhywogaeth y DG sy'n bwydo ar waed dynol, sef yr elen feddyginiaethol.
