While economists have extensively studied gender norms affecting women, masculinity norms – the informal rules that guide and constrain the behaviours of boys and men – remain underexplored. This column reviews how such norms can shape economic outcomes in labour markets, health, education, households, and politics. Drawing on new survey data from 87,000 individuals across 70 countries, the authors show that adherence to masculinity norms strongly predicts men's labour supply, risk-taking, health behaviours, and support for authoritarian leadership.

This column, taken from a CEPR book on the economic consequences of the second Trump administration, catalogues the relevant policy shifts that are likely to affect the financial sector and considers how these shifts may impact financial stability, capital markets, and the global dollar system.

As large language models gain traction, it is important to ensure that decisions delegated to them comply with ethical and legal principles. This column reports on an experiment in which state-of-the-art large language models were prompted to impersonate the CEO of a fictitious financial firm needing to repay corporate debt urgently with no funds available except for customer deposits. The findings indicate that some models incline towards fraudulent behaviour even when alternatives exist. Adequate prompting strategies may reduce risk, but are not sufficient. Further analysis of how such models make choices in the financial domain is essential, along with the adoption of appropriate governance frameworks in financial institutions.

Visions and Realities: Exploring tensions in what we do and how we live

Productivity growth has been lacklustre over the past 20 years in most advanced economies. But standard productivity measures ignore the progress that some economies have made in terms of lowering carbon dioxide emissions. This column proposes a method to embed those efficiency gains into existing productivity measures. For traditional (small) estimates of the cost of climate change, the adjustment to productivity for emissions is small. When quantified using recent (high) estimates of the economic costs of climate change, emissions-adjusted productivity growth has accelerated – rather than slowed down – in recent years.
