Challenging students' preconceptions today as I started teaching my Roman army module, probably for the very last time. Some fun discussion and an unexpected observation from a student that made me go 'wow'.
The greater unpredictability of active learning brings more opportunity for such gems.

Have been absolutely loving the women's sport this summer - England brilliant in both the footie and the rugby, and the Hundred women's games were live on YouTube whilst the men's were paywalled!

A6 Notes as a trail of my thought processes and development.
Or Notes as part of the increasingly middle-aged survival kit? ;-)

ooh, no I haven't. May try that and go with student preference. Thanks!

I'm going to survey the students; I wonder if the podcast style will become wearying or they get fed up with the hyper-enthusiasm, but 'everything is awesome'!

A5 I'm experimenting with Google's LLM Notebook to turn my lecture notes into an 'emergency podcast' for students who've not managed to review all the pre-class materials for my flipped learning modules. A 10-12 minute AI generated podcast which covers the essentials surprisingly well.

Yes; I used to type out my notes during my undergrad degree. The typing (real old-fashioned typewriter) helped me process the notes and so the typed version reflected my understanding and thoughts as well as the lecturer's.

A4 Smooth interface between pen and paper or stylus and screen is essential; I hate it when it's scratchy!
Writing implement that's just the right circumference for me.
A non-chewable writing implement (or I'll chew it)

A3 Don't try to note down everything - think before committing to paper (or whatever)
Just accept that if you're doing mind maps or notes that grow organically in all directions, you'll never start at the right spot on the paper!

Sorry I was late joining, in the middle of packing boxes before my house refurb!
Hi, I'm Dean for Curriculum & Learning Innovation at Cardiff Uni :-)

A2 I need to write, but I encourage students to explore different options, including mind maps and voice recorder.

A1 note-taking was revolutionised last year when I bought a Remarkable. It's essentially a digital pad of paper with cloud file-storing option, and it's what I've been looking for for years.
Normal hand-writing. Few abbreviations, fair amount of bullet points.

Finishing up the holiday with an excursion to Mullach Clach a'Bhlair. I love the Cairngorm plateaus - bimbling around at 900m; a decent weather day if a bit blowy at times.

A double Munro day above Drumochter today, lucky with the weather after yesterday's deluge!

"A lot of my job involves being indoors, doing speeches and things like that, so I wanted to do something that was a bit more practical where I could help people,"
One of the reasons I really enjoy being in MR too.

Loch an Eilein in the Cairngorms, swimming out to the island and exploring the castle (felt slightly Swallows & Amazons!)

Visited the Hillfort under Attack immersive experience today. Excellent with so much to look at in the virtual world; terrific detail (despite those palisade stakes stuck vertically in the rampart!), great info in the commentary and some good modern comparisons.
Thanks @trimontiumtrust.bsky.social ❤️

#Burnswark #Hillfort (Dumfriesshire) saw a huge Roman siege c. AD 140 — 3,000 inside vs. 5,000 Romans.

So, which Munro is the ultimate combination of high, exposed, scary, remote, boggy, rivery and generally to be avoided?
Just wanting to check it's not on my list for the upcoming holiday!
penarthkate.bsky.social
Just pulled it up on YouTube to watch whilst I work :-D
Going on form, it should be a good game.

Me too. My dad was supposed to have been on the list for a place in a local government shelter because he was a blood specialist, but he'd never have taken it. The threat of nuclear war felt so real in those days.
