It seems that one member of the Arctic expedition thought that flying a plague flag at the North Pole would keep polar bears away as 'they won't be keen on getting mumps'.

I have read Winter Holiday many times but only just noticed the wonderful phrase 'Her mind was in the oven'. (Mrs. Dixon baking her famous pork pies.)
