Even now 20 years after publication “Penicillin Man” hasn’t dated, still sells, still attracts attention & still “exudes a quiet authority” while authorship of 8 books later should make me more than “a one hit wonder”

Alexander Fleming was born at Lochfield Farm, Darvel on 6 August 1881. When the memorial stone was restored 17 years ago, as Fleming’s biographer & as Curator of the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum, I had the honour of unveiling it on 29 May 2008

Gratifying when a museum visitor looked up from his phone while I was presenting to visitors at Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum and said that he’d just ordered “Penicillin Man” inspired by my talk

Where have the years gone between”Penicillin Man” (2004) & “Titanic: Ship of Lost Illusions” (2025)? In terms of books breadth of subject, depth of research & I hope originality in approach with something new to contribute. More Isaiah Berlin’s Fox than Hedgehog perhaps? Or maybe self-delusion!

My first and my latest (eighth) books - “Penicillin Man” and “Titanic: Ship of Lost Illusions”, very different in subject matter from each other but great not to be a one trick pony let alone a one hit wonder!

It could have been a busman’s holiday while visiting the Fleming Museum at Biomedical Sciences Research Center "Alexander Fleming" at Vari for a family day, but thank you to Director George Skretas & his friends for inviting me to an party with Greek food, traditional music & dancing afterwards

Both the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum in the Clarence Wing, St Mary’s Hospital & the BSRC Alexander Fleming, Vari are hidden behind scaffolding yet the views from the Center in Vari are as magnificent as ever, just as I remembered from last time. Back in Paddington but ready to return to Vari

Still lecturing on the fight against antibiotic resistance after all these years - throwback to 2018 visit to the then University of Bolton with my keynote lecture followed by observing Biological Sciences student discussion groups & presentations. It was a superb day with great students

Is it that unusual for a historian to have taught and lectured in universities and at conferences to medical and scientific audiences more than to history, archive or museum groups? Bridging the arts/humanities-sciences gap indeed!

It must be surreal to revisit a museum after 20 years only to find the same person there whose presentation made the visit so memorable for you all those years ago and recognise him. But that was exactly what happened to a visitor to Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum today.

In these days of rampant misinformation about science, it was good to hear a visitor praise the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum and its peers for educating visitors & enthusing the young for the wonders of true science rooted in its history

The Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum is a stage set against which the presenter retells the fascinating story of the extraordinary discovery of penicillin, earning congratulations & audience applause for an engaging & humorous performance 'as an actor'!

Amalia Fleming, political activist widow of Alexander Fleming, was twice imprisoned, for resistance activities during the German occupation of Athens, & in 1971 for opposition to the Greek junta before being stripped of her Greek citizenship, retold in her perhaps misnamed book “A Piece of Truth”

A visitor recommending Fleming Museum: “Fantastic landmark place to visit. I first visited in 1998 as a small child. Now returned to find it exactly as it was then. A must visit for future microbiologist, or anyone with interest in Biology/immunology/vaccines/antibiotics.”

“While relatively small, it left a big impression. Opened in 1993 in the exact spot of the original lab & directed by archivist and Fleming biographer, Kevin Brown, the museum brings Fleming's paramount discovery to life.” (Danielle Gaberi, Mayo Clinic Library) pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
