During an exhibition rehang, closing some of the galleries is necessary. The downstairs galleries will be closed from 6 -15 October 2025. The Museum and Gallery 5 will be open with a selection of Newlyn School works.

A photograph of the promenade with three stylish ladies approaching the photographer. The sea railings were replaced with a new design in 1896, and the whole area was paved in the following year.

⭐️Artist's Spotlight⭐️The 'Queen of Newlyn', Canada-born Elizabeth Adela Forbes, nee Armstrong, was one of the leading women artists of her day.

Forbes was a vibrant contributor to the art colony, exhibiting and selling more work than most of her male contemporaries.

On this day in 1847, Norman Garstin was born. He arrived in Newlyn in 1886, moving to Penzance in 1889, where he finally settled, living at Wellington Terrace. His most famous work is 'The Rain it Raineth Every Day', 1889, showing Penzance promenade on a rainy day.

He described himself as an “oil painter of seascapes, watercolourist and etcher of architectural subjects” and worked for a time as artist and art critic for the Western Morning News.
