We wish to offer our thoughts and solidarity to the Jewish community following the horrific violence in Manchester this morning. We are continuing to work with our Jewish community partners at this difficult time.

The programme launches at a time when many communities affected by discrimination feel they live in an increasingly hostile environment amid rises in hate crime, racism, and xenophobia – both at a community and national level.
peopleshealthtrust.bsky.social
Discrimination contributes to people living longer in poor health and dying younger. Some groups are more likely to experience discrimination: racially minoritised communities, people seeking asylum & refugees, older people, women, LGBTQ+ people, and those with health conditions & disabilities.

The programme will be evaluated by @nihrsphr.bsky.social – with a particular focus on measuring health benefits for local people in participating in the collective campaigning.
peopleshealthtrust.bsky.social
The programme aims to tackle head on the mental and physical health effects of discrimination, creating opportunities for local people to challenge the practices, behaviour and structural conditions that result in this unfair treatment.

Working with community partners and academics initially in six towns and cities in England, local people will share their experiences of discrimination and develop an action plan for tackling it.

Today we launch Discrimination and Health, a new programme to help local people experiencing discrimination – including racism, homophobia and transphobia, ablism, misogyny, and agism – to take action & secure positive change to benefit their health.

Governments must also address some of the known causes of anger, disengagement and health inequalities, including poor housing, insecure jobs and low income, as means of improving life satisfaction and health outcomes.

We’re calling on the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments to fully recognise the immediate and longer-lasting mental and physical health impacts of racist violence, including the ongoing impact of the 2024 racist riots.

We also heard that many of the social and political conditions that led to the racist riots have deteriorated further with genuine fear from the majority of organisations of recurring violence if the material conditions that led to last year’s violence aren’t addressed.
peopleshealthtrust.bsky.social
We heard from over 50 community organisations working with thousands of local people in neighbourhoods worst affected by last year’s racist violence.

62% reported that those they work with are ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to experience racist hate crime or violence in the near future.

1 year on from last summer’s racist riots, our new report highlights experiences of communities across GB who told us that health impacts have been longer-lasting + worsened by increasingly hostile environments, misinformation & harmful politic rhetoric.

Clean air is an essential for good health but it's not available for everyone. Disadvantaged communities experience some of the worst air quality, cutting lives short.

We’re supporting @healthequals.bsky.social campaign to #MakeHealthEqual and ensure that everyone has clean air to breathe.

90% of us in Britain live in areas where we’re breathing toxic air. ⚠️

It's not just harming our health but cutting tens of thousands of lives short every year.

Is that fair? Help us call on MPs to #MakeHealthEqual — starting with the air we breathe. 👉https://bit.ly/4kWQ72L
