I'm afraid, if you try hard enough you can justify any purchase. 😅 But if you use Lego mini figs I recommend base plates of 3 studs with a jumper plate at the center. 3 studs is about an Inch wide, which fits most grids.
The Varl Lego Minifig from Horizon Adventures 77037 next to a base plate construction consisting of 3x3plate with a 3x1 jumper plate in the middle and a 3x1 tile both at the front and the back. All Lego pieces are black. Same image as before, but the front 3 studs of the plate are exposed now and the front 3x1 tile lies next to the base plate construction. The Varl Lego Minifig from Horizon Adventures 77037 now on top the black base plate construction. To the right now the Captain Rex Lego Minifug from Star Wars 75391 on the same base plate construction, but with blue tiles and a grey jumper plate. Same Figs as before, but now to the right again Aloy from Horizon Adventures 77037 on the same base plate construction, but with green tiles and a brown jumper plate.
