I hope that you, dear stranger, can reach out and make a connection that spits in the face of the powers that want us to not care for each other. And if you cannot connect, I hope that you can rest on the laurels of your own bravery. To try at all is incredibly scary.

I think when I do something scary like make myself vulnerable to rejection, I am looking in the face the programming that has tried to convince me that I should not seek community or connection. And I am spitting in that face.

Similar to how communism is said to not work, but every instance of communism has been sabotaged by imperial colonial entities, the burning husks of every attempt pointed to as an example to not try it yourself. False evidence.

I think education on how to have healthy internal boundaries when caring about others is intentionally made unavailable, so that people are convinced that if they care they will drown under the weight of a suffering they cannot change.

I think we have an unfair expectation towards ourselves and how much we should show up for each other that-because we cannot meet it- then turns into an empathy burnout.

If you are never taught how to swim, how can you be expected not to drown? Similarly, if you are not taught how to care for others in a way that does not entirely deplete your capacity to function- how will you care for others without running yourself into the ground?

I think it is that belief that will stop fascism. I think it is that belief that will keep communities safe.
It is true that there are some few who find opportunity to exploit- it is true that we are taught this is how everyone thinks. Compassion and a sense of justice is a muscle to be exercised.

And yet, I still feel it in my soul. In the core of my bones, I believe that I can connect with most people. I believe that I can care about most people. I believe that most people can care about me.

I’ve been thinking on stranger danger, and how anybody is more likely to be my friend than my enemy. Of course that’s hard for me to fully believe as a sex worker due to the violence that we face simply by existing.

To expand on this, I think there’s something valuable and important found in reaching out to someone that you can barely remember.
Maybe it has something to do with how fascism feeds on people feeling disconnected from each other.
