Maybe it's easier with pets because I can see they are also making an effort. It's not me feeling skewered by someone who is completely unfazed, it's like we're both a little fazed.

With a lot of mammals eye contact is absolutely fraught and even dangerous. I don't understand how allistic casual eye contact is considered the norm.
