He wrote all that! Really!

This photo is proof.

He told me I'm his muse (aw, stop it!)

10 years later, this guy is almost 18.

He's an ornery, grumpy curmudgeon now.

I reached this vantage point in Florence after about a 1-hour walk. Wander, roam: charming discoveries await you

The ancients meant for you to gaze upon this and think: I must strive to come close to this perfection--physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual perfection.

The oldest cold-case homicide known. Never investigated on the TV show. Otzi the Ice Man lived in around 3350 BC. He was found with an arrow head in his shoulder and blade marks on his bones. Somebody killed him high up in the Dolomite mountains of Italy. I know I had an alibi for that evening

An Italian train station at dusk. When I first came to Italy I found trains and train travel terribly romantic (not the Love Actually kind) and I still do. There's something about it. Pulling into the station in Rome or Milan can be cinematic in a way

Talk about kill your darlings. Hard to do when they're whole novels. When John Gardner wrote about shelving entire manuscripts I thought: it'll never happen to me. No way.

The writer's journey is ... pretty shitty sometimes!

My copy of Stephen King's On Writing is 23 years old, but its wisdom is timeless. A few gems:

Fear is at the root of most bad writing

Bad books can teach you how not to write

Plot is, I think, the good writer's last resort and the dullard's first choice

Venice on a breezy autumn day. The Peggy Guggenheim Museum has a terrace from where the Grand Canal can be viewed. This is almost worth the price of admission alone. It's easy to while an hour away watching the traffic (gondolas, boat taxis) pass by

This is what I see every time I look up from my writing. He seems to be trying to say: What could possibly be more important than me? (He's been asking this for the last 16 years)
