Mostly moths, but then there'll be leafmines and bees and craneflies and..... well, easily distracted by wildlife.
More Coleophora hunting on Oak. Think this time have found flavi/lutipennella? @vc28nature.bsky.social see what you mean about tiny, this was much smaller. Can't really make out dorsal hump but distinct pale patch at anal end. Is this enough for flavipennella please?

Coleophora case on Oak bud this morning, lutipennella/flavipennella, I think. Can't make out a dorsal hump or pale patch at anal end, so possibly lutipennella more likely? @vc28nature.bsky.social is it a rear & gen det or is there enough of a difference in the winter cases to tell? Thanks 👍

Checking Gorse at Baggeridge yesterday and found a Phyllonorycter ulicolella. New record for Baggeridge 😊

On a rather chilly Christmas Eve, I just thought I'd see what Santa might bring with him. I suspect it's just an invite for Sir T. I was going to get some uv fairy lights and deck the house and tree to compete with the "blackpool" effect of the street, but the trap will have to do. #teammoth

Went. To collect some willow sticks to make a willow we've star. Got a bit distracted, came back with a couple of Phyllocnistis mines 😊 Have to wait and see what comes back from the review of these on willows. One of possibly 4. So I'll keep an eye on the tree for future ID 😊 #teammoth #leafmines

Blackened mine on Broom with dark egg, so pretty sure that clinches it as Trifurcula immundella .

Checking Broom for miners, an old mine with very dead dedicated larva. Trifucula immundella the most likely I guess, but need to find an egg. Not found it yet! Any of the Broom miners would be new baggeridge record, need to find a live one 😊 #teammoth #leafminers

Found a couple of Leafmines in Gorse stems. Both larvae dead, but think enough of this one to look like Phyllonorycter ulicolella? @vc28nature.bsky.social Does this look ok please?

Came out from scouts tonight to be greeted by a moonbow! Seen halos round the moon before, but none that made such an obvious "rainbow" 😊

Started December wither 5 December moths in the garden trap 😊
December 2, 2025 at 8:51 PM
Well, the baggeridge mv was empty this morning. Bit of a surprise as driving out last night there must have been 30+ winter/eppirita moths and several ( probably) scarce numbers in the headlights up the drive! So, it doesn't count as a complete blank i reckon.

An LBA kept Wogan at bay, but only just. Tonight, however, there'll be loads of moths, of course there will, absolutely guaranteed !🙏🙏🙏

New study confirms that short wavelength light (UV & blue) attracts the most nocturnal insects & that intensity increases attraction for all colours. Longer wavelength & lower intensity outdoor lights should reduce biodiversity impacts resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #teammoth 🌍

Staring at catterpillar bums again, looking for an "anal comb"!!!
Found a larva inside a Teasel in the garden. Pretty sure head is very dark brown, not black. And from all angles, I've looked at its bum, I can't see a comb! In which case it'll be Endothenia gentianaeana! Fun afternoon 😁 #teammoth

Shopping trip to Telford. Ectoedemia argyropeza on Aspen and Ectoedemia intimella on Sallow. Retail centre car park mining 😊 #teammoth

A nice but lonely Mottled Umber on the outside of the trap last night 😊
November 16, 2025 at 2:13 PM
Hi Rob, I persevered and teased the remains of the larva out from its mine in the Alder. The head end still relatively intact and looks more like the pics of S.glutinosae I think. What do you reckon? In good enough condition to tell? Thanks @vc28nature.bsky.social #teammoth

This Stigmella larva on Oak had a bad time of it! It's got the "worm like" creature that's eating its way out of the head and looks like something else has come out of the side.
Do like a bit of parasitism, gruesome but fascinating 😁
Dark sclerites? so once possibly S.atricapitella ? #teammoth
November 14, 2025 at 6:11 PM
Hi Rob, I popped out and found another glutinosae/alnetella, parasitised but slightly better condition, pics from top and bottom, but still not sure if that's clear enough to tell. What do you think? I'll search for more tomorrow when it's dryer! @vc28nature.bsky.social

3 mines from a soggy dog walk round Perton. Phyllonorycter strigulatella on Grey Alder, Stigmella speciosa on Sycamore and a Stigmella glutinosae or alnetella. ? I think you need the larva to tell which but as this ones dead not sure possible? @vc28nature.bsky.social is it IDable Rob? ##teammoth

In spite of torrential rain managed 3 Feathered Thorn in the garden. Conundrum! Oak leaf blown into garden from nearby, do the mines count on the garden list 🤔😊 well maybe if tenanted.

Thought I might have used up all my mothing credits on leafminers but managed a late Mottled Rustic and a Turnip. Also found another Ectoedemia quinquella, five spot dot close to home 😊 #teammoth @vc39moths.bsky.social
