For Batman, it is Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight Returns' that casts a long shadow and (almost) every movie / TV / game adaptation is cursed to be inspired by.
For Superman, the equivalent is the Richard Donner / Christopher Reeve 'Superman' film.
