Fascinating. The cover I had as a child is attached. Of course this one, though atmospheric and full of action ... rather neglects the protagonist?

We're holding out until Candlemas. Tree still up, another batch of mince pies produced yesterday...

Makes sense. When hobbits got permission to settle the Shire "all that was demanded of them was that they should keep the Great Bridge in repair, and all other bridges and roads, speed the king's messengers, and acknowledge his lordship". (LotR prologue).

Sadly Bluesky only lets me like it once!

Sorry I should have checked my source first rather than posting like a ninnyhammer as I see from http:/acoup.blog that is already the plan.

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social gave an excellent talk at a recent moot about the ancient and modern parallels for Eowyn's desire for heroic death and eventual choice to live after the war. I don't know if there is a plan to make it more widely available some time e.g. on his blog (hint...)

Yorkshire, England. Personally I'm not a fan of marshmallow fluff so it wouldn't be for me. I've never heard of this particular combination.

I gave a talk at Oxonmoot this year about the First Crusade and the Return of the Noldor. My wife's feedback was that there was rather too much history - I tried to explain that was the point. You will already know both the real and fictional history but I can share if you'd like to see my take.

There was some top notch 80s fantasy dialogue in Beastmaster 3 AFAIR. "Where does Lord Agon keep his prisoners?" "In the dungeons!" Classic.

Movie you’ve watched more than six times with a gif. Hard mode: no Stars (Wars nor Trek), LOTR, or Marvel.

Great stuff! By the way there may be a DWJ stealth joke around Jamal. It's suggested he go north and start a Rashpuhti restaurant. In the end he doesn't. However Jamal's has been a restaurant in Oxford since 1956 (though I don't know if they actually serve squid).

Fascinating. It seems this was because he was concerned that it would be ammunition for those who portrayed his writings as 'anti-Leftist propaganda'.
