Great! He's like what other people foolishly don't like about Heck or Robbins, so I know I'm being unfair, but my heart sinks when I see him in an old book, and he did tons of stuff, so he was obviously well regarded. Sorry Jack in comic book heaven!

Is there a faxi smile of this? Same size? I've got an original, but it's past it's best ( the pages are a bit whiffy ). The only one there I could never get on with is Jack Sparling. He was a real pro, and by all accounts well liked, but I've just never warmed to his style, and I've tried.

Don't have that one! Been going through my Charlton mystery books, and Sutton was the star for me ( even above Ditko, Staton, Newton & Zeck ). I think his best work was done at Charlton.

And Paul Gulacy's 'The Trespasser', and Manhunter!

Greatest teenage anthem of all time. No, don't bother disagreeing, I'm right.
It slags off politicians AND opticians, for flip's sake.

@marclaming.bsky.social is one of the many pro's I've met online & at cons who've been incredibly kind & supportive to my work, so if you're at all nervous about getting a portfolio review at @thoughtbubbleuk.bsky.social don't be! Get in there & talk to the guys who can give you the best advice!

Absolute solid gold. I have my parents CD collection that I can enjoy, and reflect on the songs I know were their favourites that were my childhood, but mixtapes are even more... well, everything, really.
And your mum obviously had good taste, bless her memory.

To all utility suppliers, insurance companies & vendors of goods I'm forced to pay money for.
When I have to phone you, my name is Mr. Doree, not Pete or Peter.
I won't be putting you up in the spare room after a night in the pub with me.
We're not going to be meeting up later.
We ain't pals.

Harvey Kurtzman was once called 'The Grandfather of Undergound comics' and he responded by asking for a blood test.
The makers of Airplane & The Naked Gun also owe him a cheque BTW. What are they but Kurtzman & Elder's MAD in movie form?

Today is the birthday of Harvey Kurtzman (Oct. 3, 1924-Feb. 21, 1993). He wrote, edited, & drew stories for Two-Fisted Tales & Frontline Combat for EC. The creator of the comic that became Mad magazine, he was editor from 1952-1956, & wrote Little Annie Fanny for Playboy from 1962-1988.
A black and white photo of Kurtzman at his typewriter, blowing bubbles with his pipe. The first issue of Mad, which was a comic book when first published.

It was an issue of 1984 but I can't remember which one! I think about #7 or #8 😆

Unless of course, you're Alex Nino, who once did a 16 page strip for Warren consisting of double page spreads that, if you bought 16 copies of the same comic, made one entire picture.
And trust me.
You're not Alex Nino.

💯Mine's still in surprisingly good nick, as are my Roger Dean & other Dragon's Dream books - They definitely made books that lasted
petedoree.bsky.social
Still his best work for me. Said it before, I'm sure, but bought mine back then in a remaindered bookshop that me &
@seanphillips.bsky.social used to haunt every Saturday when we were kids. We both still have our copies!

Cheers buddy, maybe next year as I say, but have a grand time, and congrats on Endeavour, looks stunning, hope it sells buckets!
petedoree.bsky.social
Hey Marc, unfortunately not, I was planning to do Bedford but that's not on for some reason. D'you ever get to the London Comic Mart or is that too far for you? Would be great to catch up as you say but might have to be next year if not as I don't think I can make MCM sadly

Current re-reading: John Jakes' late '60's Conan pastiche Brak The Barbarian, who had a blink-and-miss-it comic career in the Bronze Age.
Actually quite good, with the odd interesting edge ( in this fantasy world, Christianity sort of exists ).
Love these covers too, which in no way look like Brak.

Little bit of Reed Crandall there. If the timing had've been right, he'd've fit right in Archie Goodwin's Warren era.

Thanks to @jonnycannon.bsky.social of this parish, who clarified that Kubert was an assistant to Mort Meskin, who was also a big inspiration for Ditko! Makes total sense 👍

On Joe Kubert's birthday: I always liked how you can sometimes see Ditko in his style, and sometimes Kubert's in Ditko's, and how if you mix them, you sort of get Moebius.
A Joe Kubert cover of Hawkman fighting an extra-dimensional baddie A Steve Ditko cover of Doctor Strange facing an extra-dimensional force ( Eternity ) A Moebius illustration called 'Starwatcher'. The character is holding a box containing a star or a soul.
