In 1923, Scottish minister John White wrote “The Menace of the Irish Race". This could have been lifted straight out of it

Stephen Daisley knows all this - not least as I wrote about it in a book he reviewed - but prefers to crack on with the same narrative 100 years later

Outstanding piece by Stephen Daisley.

Ethnicity is no barrier to Britishness - it's culture and integration.

That means 'smaller cohorts and aggressive integration policies' - and tackling the institutions that 'have amplified grievance narratives and radical anti-Western ideologies'.

Reform conference was the same

Feels under reported on but a sizeable amount of politicos (and I think voters) think IMF-style crisis is coming fast. Assume it’s a meme somewhere?

It’s striking how many Tory fringe events I’ve been at where people have confidently predicted a major fiscal or markets crisis for the government in the next 12ish months. I have no idea if that has any credibility, but it’s notable how much perhaps misplaced confidence it gives some Conservatives.

I think his radicalisation started when he couldn’t even get his name into the podcast he hosted with Robbie Savage and Andrew Flintoff: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b...

Matthew Syed’s ‘journey’ has been grimly fascinating

Been following it ever since he wrote a column endorsing the Great Replacement ‘Theory’

Wild what passes for ‘public intellectual’ in Britain
peterwalker99.bsky.social
The UK is “madly left, madly liberal, hyper-progressive”, Syed says. This is a deeply odd speech, seemingly from yet another person who spends a lot of time on X.

[I deleted earlier post which had the typo of saying, 'US' rather than 'UK'.]

Just noticed the Conservatives’ British ICE proposal also involves using mass deployment of facial ID – still an unproven and unreliable technology that particularly struggles with non-white faces – to enable deportations.

Which would inevitably mean false positives leading to detention of citizens

Badenoch actually has the effect of making Farage seem like a serious politician

Someone who spends way too much time on X? (Semi serious)

The Conservative Party has now completely lost the plot

Surely there’s a space for a centre right party opening up in Britain?

Honored to have this conversation with @petergeoghegan.bsky.social - Britain’s most effective journalist on covering dark money, concentration of power and corruption…answer to ‘how fucked are we?’ was something along the lines of ‘more than we should be’

‘The UK is a low budget version of the US’

So good to talk @emilybell.bsky.social about the growing nexus between authoritarian politics, big tech and the media.

Plus remembering the remarkable Conor Gearty

Could Trump’s war on the media happen here?
As Emily Bell says, billionaires and strongmen alike understand one thing: control the media, and you control democracy.

Not to make light of the editorial failure, but look how far Twitter lies now permeate in to normal discourse. We think we know about the racism but the utter contempt for truth since Musk bought the platform is deliberate & very dangerous. You can’t foment racism with fact checkers in the building.

Much like Peter, I heard a lot of grumbling from 'business day' attendees being taken for granted ("we're a cash cow to be milked dry"), that ministers turned up late or the wrong ones were dispatched.

My favourite criticism though was the shit "built and carved" sandwiches

A backbench Labour MP posed with the Premier League trophy.

Photograph snapped, she thanked the league’s reps: “Hopefully I’ll see you guys in parliament. Anything I can do to help, let me know.”

I went to Liverpool this week. I found lots of "Labour specialist" lobbyists, and barely a word on cleaning up politics.
