Classic Literature / Books 📚 Balzac, Zola, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Shakespeare, Plato, Homer - just a few of my favourites.

🇬🇧 Living in Wrocław, Poland
After 160 pages, I’m reluctantly DNF’ing this book or at least coming back to it at another time.

Just not into it, plot moving slow, not invested in the characters. I could plod along but when there’s more Balzac, Zola, Trollope to read, I want move on and get through more of those authors.

My latest Trollope, this time a Penguin. Great cover, hey!

I’m currently reading The Way We Live Now, but have heard Dr. Wortle is a good novel to begin a Trollope journey with.

Looking forward to reading it.

My latest acquisition from OWC.
Beautiful cover as so often with OWC titles.
Large print I did not expect from OWC.
Surprising comment from Trollope on this book.
Probably not my next Trollope read but sometime soon.
Only 3 standalone Trollope novels from Penguin. Wider collection with OWC.

book I want to keep reading. Anthony Trollope’s The Way We Live Now.

I have a few Trollope’s on my bookshelf but this is the first one I am settling down to read. I’m really liking it so far and yes it is long and in small print but I think I’ll be fine this time. It feels like 2025 reading is go.

And some more…

I haven’t been on here for a little while, but things have been busy and all that.

Some of the busyness though was a nice work trip to Paris and during some downtime on the final day, I had a little wander in the Notre Dame area. Here’s some pictures 😀

I love new books in bookshops but I also love seeking out older books, which are not easily available anymore.

This book of course must have seen better days but I bought it years ago on eBay and is always my go-to companion for reading Shakespeare plays.

Day 3
November 20, 2024 at 11:49 AM
After my mini indecisive period, I have decided to crack on with my reading of A Christmas Carol. It’s never good to be thinking of reading a book to plug a gap, you just have to move on with what you want to read.

Oxford World’s Classics don’t half do some beautiful covers, right?

I love books about books and this one by a single author is incredible.

The very first line is heartwarming and something to hope to be:

“I caught the reading bug as a child from my mother, who is still, at eighty-nine, the most constant reader I know”

Day 1
November 18, 2024 at 7:17 PM
I recently finished reading Balzac’s The Black Sheep. My third Balzac novel overall, it’s not as page-turning as Cousin Bette, but a great story nonetheless. I haven’t read a bad Balzac novel yet.
