If you need a discreet way to get your routine testing, I recommend stdcheck .com: you order the tests online, pick a convenient lab, and the results come in your email. The only downside is that you can’t filter the list of labs based on whether they’ll give you a Spider-Man bandaid.

Six astronauts look out from their space station while orbiting the Earth and reflect on our planet and humanity. A beautiful novel.

Here’s one for Black History Month: a novel about reproductive justice, inspired by the true story of the thousands of poor, black women who were sterilized under US government programs in the 1970s.

Republicans keep rejecting the ideals of Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Eisenhower, who thought government should provide opportunity for all, and focus on corporations and the wealthy, using racism to get people to vote against their best interests. Written in 2014, pre-Trump. (4/4)

An account of the Biden administration’s reaction to the Ukraine and Israel crises. I wish there had been more analysis and reflection but it was certainly interesting, and very clear how many Republican experts see Trump as incompetent and a threat to national security. (3/4)

The autobiography of the leading opposition politician in Russia who was poisoned and then killed in prison. A compelling personal story and history of modern Russia. Fortunately we don’t have an autocratic, kleptocratic government that punishes its opponents… never mind. (2/4)

My first three books of 2025. If I was looking for something to read that would reassure and console me as we enter a second Trump era, these were not the ones to choose. All excellent though… (1/4)

The brain fog of Covid lifted just in time for some holiday baking: Christmas cookies, sticky toffee puddings, and a Swiss roll for my Yule log.

Netherlands, 1961: an uptight woman’s routine is disrupted when her brother’s girlfriend moves in with her. Disgust gradually turns to erotic infatuation, but an ominous aura pervades the story as secrets are revealed about unresolved trauma from the war. A remarkable book.

A short but moving novel about three friends who travel to an island to fish and reminisce about the past, but who are not welcome by the locals or by the spirits that live there. A quiet, haunting story.

Do other people feel sonder? I do, all the time: watching people at the airport and on the plane, looking at the windows of a hotel or apartment building, or thinking about the companions whose lives have touched so many in ways I will never know.

Do you ever think about all the people that come in and out of our lives, sometimes only briefly, but the impact they have on our selves can be durable? And over time you realize that it is these connections that are more important than the next achievement?
This novel explores those relationships.

I’m looking forward to the wine lineup for tomorrow (with apologies to the Old World wine aficionadas out there)

An historical fiction novel centered on a 19th century English legal case about a claimant to the aristocracy, on slavery, and on a 2nd-rate novelist under the shadow of Dickens, that explores expectations around race, gender, class, and relationships, and about who we really are.

More Thanksgiving prep:

They’re not the prettiest oatmeal cookies, but they’re just going to get crumbled on top of the sweet potatoes.
Unless I snack on too many of them first 😋

Detectives come to a rural Mississippi town to investigate a bizarre murder: it looks like Emmitt Till has come back from the grave to seek retribution. Gruesome and darkly humorous, this novel explores racism and the legacy of lynching, where the greatest crime is our history.
