He would say that your version of Christianity misunderstands the concept of love (i.e., promoting the welfare of Aryan, sorry, ‘Murcan Men).

Hey, we would have won in Vietnam if the press had only covered the good things that we were doing there…

(The 1984 Cubs actually were the 3rd team in 4 years to drop a best-of-five series after being up 2-0.)

A lot more often than people think, but not so often as to be "probable."

There is no mechanism to force them to do so, just as there was no mechanism to force McConnell to act on Garland’s nomination.

WHAT IS IT with old white russian men and high windows?? and more importantly, why isn't Putin afflicted with this problem??

Well, Arkansas is famous for its anti-American radical lefties…

I wonder what was wrong with him for 2+ months. Whatever it was, it's healed now.

The problem is that reality has become (and really always has been) a partisan issue, and this is just one aspect of that.

And I certainly knew what the Rachel was as a hairstyle, even if I never saw Jennifer Aniston actually wearing that style!

What stood out to me about Friends is that I never watched it and yet it was such a cultural phenomenon that I still knew about the big developments on the show.

(I particularly remember Newt Gingerich’s sister setting off a firestorm with her subsequent comments after appearing on the show!)

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.
peterjwagner3.bsky.social
Oh, it’s not. Attendance & viewership go way up when teams win. That makes the game more profitable. Now, a certain school of fans might be less entertained regardless because it is not the “same” game. However, they clearly are a minority of the overall fanbases.

… that mindset anymore. And any team that tried would routinely lose 90 games. Basically, baseball would need to ban the best pitchers to make the game fun again.

(“And… the radar gun clocked that pitch at 95.1 MPH: that’s an automatic ejection!” would be such a compelling line from Pat Hughes…🤡)
peterjwagner3.bsky.social
But there’s also nothing more entertaining than watching your favorite teams win!

Sparky Anderson proposed modern pitching in the ‘70s. However, he sardonically noted that he couldn’t implement it because wins for SP apparently were more important than wins for teams. There’s no going back to…

… lose and nothing else. No "approach" is going to help: we're dealing with the upper limits of human reaction time. It's almost like some orthogenesis model in which the system cannot help but to evolve into a state that is going to lead to its extinction.
peterjwagner3.bsky.social
That's a big problem for baseball right now: modern pitching is so good that K-rates are through the roof. And it's not like approaches can change that: upper 90s pitching was always the bane of "contact" hitters. There is no incentive for teams to stop using high velo pitchers: it's a good way to…

The biggest bloc of self-identifying Christians in the US would disagree vehemently and violently m.

I worry much less about the K’s than I do about the walks. Outs are outs: so-called “productive outs” explain none of the variance in runs scored. But OBP is crucial, and walks drive OBP. (They usually go up as K’s go up: and it’s bad when they don’t.)
peterjwagner3.bsky.social
It's been a long time since a team got outhomered by 3 and won a postseason game! (Getting 3 games worth of RiSP hits, with at least a couple of them being doubles, helped.)
peterjwagner3.bsky.social
heh, true: but, then, I suspect that very few managers would have done anything different. And, let's face it, if he goes with Rea and Rea pitches poorly, then Cubs fans are convinced that Boyd would have pitched well.
peterjwagner3.bsky.social
So much of what drives the Christian Nationalists is their horror that their kids will be taught: 1) actual science; and, 2) actual history about the US in general and the South in particular.

Nothing like a nice bike ride to the museum of a glorious 85˚F (30˚C) breezy summer day in...

Early October?

And with this stupid format of game, rest, game, rest, game, they could have given him 2 days rest if they had started Rea instead: and Rea (very probably) would have put up a much more competitive outing. Now Boyd is burned & Shota goes on (I think) normal rest rather than getting an extra day off.
peterjwagner3.bsky.social
It happens every couple of years; managers always assume that the poor performance of SP on short rest in the post-season doesn't take into account that the guy had a short outing prior. But a big proportion of the time, the SP *did* have a short prior outing and he still sucked 3 days later.
