Another story one could tell from these numbers is that the anger against incumbents always tends to be disproportionately negative for Democrats. Because Republican voters are fucking dumb and easy marks, is what I would say about that, but we'll leave it there.

I think these numbers are some more data to support running progressive Dem candidates everywhere. Most people are just voting party line anyway, but you really want to get the Dem base in the cities excited and out there, pissed off.

What I think we CAN say is people in these counties really hated Hillary and Kamala (hmm, I wonder why that might be), and that Democrats in Nashville are PISSED. OFF. this year.

And then just slight shifts right in 2022 and 2024. So I do think it's significant and interesting that there is a swing left in every county, but I am interested that the swing is overall lower than the last big swing in a midterm year.
December 3, 2025 at 6:21 PM
You'll also see that the swings right in 2020 were huge by comparison. Tennessee as a whole went a lot more Republican in 2020 (I could speculate as to why, but I won't here, 2020 was a fucked up year).
December 3, 2025 at 6:21 PM
One thing you'll notice right away is that there was a swing left from 2016-2018 (not unsurprising for a midterm election). Except for Davidson county, the swings left in 2025 are all a lot smaller than from 2016-2018.

Here are vote balances in one of the major elections from each year 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024, and the TN special election.
December 3, 2025 at 6:21 PM
I'd like to see a table of these same countries from 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022 as well. Is this shift left more left than from 2016-2020? Or are we in an endless cycle of incumbent disadvantage now?
