Maybe it’s because I’m gay and always had more female friends than male, but I never understood this assertion that members of opposite gender can’t be friends, even if they are both straight. It just baffles me.

That’s interesting. I had never really thought about this before. On my mom’s side of the family, it was my generation that was the first to go to college. On my dad’s, it goes way back—at least to my great great uncles/aunts. Long history of educators and engineers.
