As a reminder, the shared-private storage is for data which is multi-user but non-public. Some common use-cases include posts, user lists, videos, documents, DMs, and basically any other kind of artefact or experience in social or productivity software. It’s not yet clear to me which of these schemes is the right approach. It’s not even clear to me whether we’ll need just one, all three, or something not included here. The goal is not to be comprehensive or conclusive right now; I just want to share the general ideas. Shared “arenas” An important nuance of shared-private storage is that the initial record being shared is not a comprehensive picture of the system. It is not like email, where the exchange consists purely of “e-mail message” objects sent back & forth. A scheme for private threads must include a solution for the original post record, the replies, likes, reposts (if allowed) and so on.

An interoperable world Atmospheric computing is about building an interoperable world. A cloud in that world can be big or small. It doesn't matter. A bigger cloud will do bigger things, and a smaller clouds will do smaller things. But they'll still talk. We need a collectivist answer to Big Tech. I'm not just interested in the battles of yesterday; if now is the time of AI, I want a personal AI running on my personal cloud. There is zero reason for us to all become subservient clients to American corporations. The model can change. The path to a sovereign tech stack is via commodification. The AT Protocol stack is akin to Backend-as-a-Service; it standardizes identity, oauth flows, permissioning, data flows, and more. We are now working with the IETF to form a Working Group [4] and I believe a standard cloud platform is emerging in these specs.

In October 2023, Mark Zuckerberg gave an interview with Alex Heath, who asked him about decentralisation and open protocols, with Zuckerberg saying he “always believed in this stuff“. With the fediverse integration for Threads now in maintenance mode, this must surely be a big blow for Zuckerberg’s belief in decentralised social networking.

The goal is to “get people off of being dependent on those promotions and wake up in the morning and just want to open the app,” Hayes explained.
