There’s a striking similarity between Jim and the pic of Jervis in the third ed rulebook which might underscore the dark elf link (wasn’t Jervis a DE coach?) but I also think that Jim’s forehead looks to have a bat shaped wrinkles!

Third edition is the first time I can find an image of Jim and Bob. They feature from 1st ed but I can’t think of any earlier fluff that describes them. Though now I want to check…
