1️⃣ Thread about one of the most improbable and extraordinary railway project which 🇨🇵 ever tried to realise.

Not in Mainland 🇲🇫, not in Corsica, but a across the Med, in the Empire: 🇲🇦🇩🇿, with extensions into 🇳🇪🇸🇳🇹🇩🇧🇫.

The TRANSAHARIAN 🛤️ (project)
MEDITERRANEAN - NIGER 🛤️
(At 🚧⛏️🛠️ stage)

The current order, placed in 2023, is about 30 sets for 🇮🇹🇦🇹🇨🇭🇫🇷🇩🇪🇧🇪🇳🇱🇪🇦.
No express reference to 🇬🇧.

30 is not much for such a wide geographic area.

Perhaps the outstanding 10 optional sets will be specified to Channel Tunnel, if ever ordered.

And TI also eyes 🇵🇹 HSR.

Haut-Bugey was re-opened on the cheapest:

not enough passing loops, and underspecified power supplies (on a line with 30%o gradients 😳😬🆘).

CFF won't make a material difference I'm afraid.

The day when 🇫🇷 defaults on debt and banks face a runaway, people will need lots cash for a few weeks.

SNCF will feel the pain for self-destroying its distribution system.
pglux.bsky.social
Yes, I know, thx 😋😉
pglux.bsky.social
If SNCF doesn't want to maintain staffed counters and vending machines, perhaps it should go for free-of-charge operation 🤡🤡🤡
pglux.bsky.social
Ideally, Platform 1 should be "Chunnelisable" 30min per every 2hrs (post S-Bahn Tunnel completion...)
pglux.bsky.social
If the current Mk2 are sets haven't been specified for Channel Tunnel operations, then it's very unlikely that these will ever run to 🇬🇧.

Retrofit will require thorough unbuilding and rebuilding.
pglux.bsky.social
And I'm pretty sure Hitachi will get more orders from TI, as ETR-500 replacement.

Delivery of the current MK2 Zefiros is drag on until 2029.
pglux.bsky.social
(Barcelona) to do a very substantial share of the job
(As for the S-100 order).
🔚
pglux.bsky.social
ONCF expects the very first deliveries in 2028, so as to be on time for 🏆⚽ 2030.

Even more pressing to nowadays, 🇲🇦 already has in an-house LGV to make early trials.

Velvet expects its fleet from 2027.

If anything is ordered for 🇪🇦🇵🇹 HSR from Alstom, one may expect Santa Perpetua de la Moguda
🔜

Alstom still have plans for a new production line for TGV-M.
pglux.bsky.social
And TMSTs are a non-standard design, which makes them even harder to maintain. Hence all those withdrawn sets used as a source of spare parts.
pglux.bsky.social
Lancy PR is somehow cramped nowadays...

Still, I wonder how that poorly-performing single-track line Bourg-Bellegarde will absorb more HSTs, as LEx will be extending to Nurieux.
pglux.bsky.social
substantially extend Secteur France and to fit a Channel Terminal inside, with flexible partitions
(Including on Platform 3).
🔚
pglux.bsky.social
This way, all the current overground station can be specialised in traffic to/from 🇫🇷.

Tracks 1-3: LEx (mainly Annemasse Bellegarde more marginal)

Track 5: useless

Tracks 4, 6-8: TGV, IC, TER (non-stop to Bellegarde mostly) Annemasse possible but more marginal.)
That leaves enough room to
🔜
pglux.bsky.social
Unless earlier plans to build a LARGE underground station at Cornavin get preferred again, it will be hard to find room for a Channel Terminal 🇨🇭🇬🇧.

The current downscaled project (1 island platform, 2 tracks), won't suffice.

With 2 and 4, then, all traffic to/from GVA ✈️ can be moved underground.

If Le Train goes bust, it will be quite a political scandal in Western 🇫🇷...

And Crédit Mutuel will not like it at all 😬😬😬
pglux.bsky.social
Are you SURE about this? 🤔🧐
pglux.bsky.social
So, if Le Train goes ahead, which rolling-stock will they use?
pglux.bsky.social
Like KevinSpeed and Alstom for Avelia Stream.

Even Le Train and its letter of intend to Talgo look more serious.

Final approval to TGV-M may help...
