All things lighthouse-related, with the occasional detour into maritime history, heritage preservation, and related fields, by an indifferent photographer, inarticulate polyglot, and unlicensed pharologist. Typos guaranteed. #lighthouse

"The lighthouse and the lightship appeal to the interest and better instinct of [humanity] because they are symbolic of never-ceasing watchfulness, of steadfast endurance in every exposure, of widespread helpfulness."

-- George Rockwell Putnam, US Commissioner of Lighthouses, 1910-1935.

A lighthouse tower stands in fromt of a fortified structure on the shore of a choppy sea. In the foreground is a small boat with five figures in it; more, larger sailing ships are in the background. Seabirds are wheeling about in the sky, which is mostly cloudy, with a patch of blue in the upper left corner.

The HMS Atalante "was an 18-cannon sloop-of-war launched in 1808, and ordered in 1806, from Bermuda. However, the ship was wrecked on 10 November 1813, caused by fog off Halifax, Nova Scotia." The drawing is therefore likely copied from an earlier work.

A three-masted sloop with billowing sails is at the center of the image, sailing from right to left. The ship is flying the British Red Ensign, a flag with a red field and the Union Jack in the upper left corner. Three smaller craft are also at sail. The sly is blue with patchy clouds. Hills rise on the shore in the background to the right, and a lighthouse stands in the distance to the left.
