Is there anything in the Greenland situation not being literal, but an attempt to move the overton window, so that Europe makes more and larger concessions because they're better than the collapse of NATO? Perhaps an 'art of the deal' move to set a shocking base price?

That is the choice.
NATO is pretty much done, and the US is an unreliable partner. Europe alone would struggle to deal with Russia, and no chance it could manage Ukraine and Greenland militarily
