Right. To be clear - I've helped when I could anyway, but there is something about it that tingles the spidey senses. But I'd rather chance helping someone who didn't need it than leaving someone stuck who did need it.

I hear this. On the street, I feel more comfortable giving to someone just saying "anything helps" than the person who follows you giving a whole litany of tragedies, thinking it will manipulate you into helping. Maybe it's all true (maybe it isn't), but it feels manipulative.
