I politely disagree. I think he does get it, he's just buying time and trying to keep NATO together for the next 3 years. Everyone knows it's currently "NINO", "NATO In Name Only" at the moment and yes we can never entirely trust the US again.

It all depends on your mental model. It is great when you've had the opportunity to exercise a lot and it feels amazing. But you can also show yourself compassion when life gets in the way and reframe that difficulty as important steps on the path to "amazing" whatever the challenge in the moment
