From my own experience, but I suspect I'm not the only one- my generation were repeatedly made to sing it at school or youth groups with no explanation, and in that situation it's just a grey unbearable dirge.

Although much of that was an equal and opposite reaction to an 00s era when DC comics in general were stuck in a rut of writers thinking "grown-up storytelling" meant "villains commit truly horrifying atrocity after truly horrifying atrocity with the heroes never managing to stop them"
