On the flip side, I see a tendency among Austrian railway stakeholders to use Germany as a scapegoat for almost any criticism directed at them – and to justify passenger-unfriendly measures (e.g. monthly line closures for maintenance that used to be done at night).

While not as bad, I hate having to stare at Vienna’s passenger information displays for what feels like an eternity, as they cycle through generic season’s greetings and fluff statements instead of showing the actual info they’re meant to show: when my tram is due.

With reasonable safety precautions, it can work – but it requires funding two-person operations, and that only makes sense if there’s a clear sense of purpose. I’m just against the idea that everything always has to be completely failsafe.

Unpopular opinion: It’s reasonable to expect some self-responsibility from passengers – especially when they choose to do something that’s not explicitly intended. But that doesn’t mean it should be prohibited.

Not typically but being stuck in traffic it sure is convenient to just get off and walk if walking seems faster. A scenario that of course is unthinkable in London, as buses have priority and there are bus lanes everywhere… right?
