I made these little ‘astro-monks’ from broken terracotta flowerpots, stitched into robe-like forms—thinking of Michael Landy’s saints, Moebius and the Brothers Quay. Then I photographed them.

Table-top colour studies inspired by Carlos Cruz-Diez: layers of light, soft focus, and a mid-century, coloured-pencil vibe—little installations that shift as you look.

Made a daft thing of cardboard feathers, hung it on elastic, and spent an evening pinging it about while the shutter stayed open. Most frames were chaos, but a few came out like a bird half-there, half-remembered.

It's night in rural France: 35mm long exposures conjure the fae from the deep, dark woods—and the uncanny sense my camera saw more out there than I did.

Last summer, I stayed again in an old French house that always coaxes out my inner ‘spirit photographer’—trying to conjure (or catch) a little phantasmagoria with my camera.

Inspired by the 1950s sci-fi classic This Island Earth (1955): I shot these as long-exposure ‘lobby-card’ stills—B&W first, then colourised to match that queasy palette of meteors and monsters.

An unwanted, plastic-wrapped sofa, bare wall—oddly alpine. I was thinking Caspar David Friedrich’s The Sea of Ice, and nodding to Christo & Jeanne-Claude.

Childhood memory: Grandad’s indoor firework ‘display’ on a battered baking tray—tiny black pellets and mini sparklers—a triumph of hope over experience.

I went back to a scrappy, unadopted patch just inland from the seafront, slipped my camera into an organza bag, and photographed the grasses as the wind worried them side to side, sunlight catching every quill, every strand.

Created using a flat-bed scanner and a stack of ordinance survey maps and guide books, I wanted to concertina as much geography as possible into a single image.

A friend’s daughter kept turning underwater—headstands, somersaults—then surfacing with her Pre-Raphaelite hair swept across her face. In that clear water and perfect blue sky, it looked oddly unreal.

Something of a new year's resolution—showing up a bit more (or showing off, as my mum would likely have it). Just turned 51: I make lots of creative things and write stories; don't tell anyone about them much, but as of now, I'm telling you.
