I volunteered to be a firefighter in my rural community. In my late forties! I have found community and camaraderie in academy and at my department, even though I am certain our politics are very different.

That we even need a department with the ominous and fascist sounding 'homeland security' is a relic of the fear of post 9/11 Bush era reactionaries. It built upon the foundation of the surveillance state, and made everyone in America less safe from the potential of a authoritarian government.

Our elected officials for the most part, seem to be hedging their bets. The cowardice displayed so far does not make me hopeful that we can reverse course, even if public sentiment shifts dramatically. They've done the bare minimum by pausing funding to DHS.

Why would you honor a political enemy? It's frankly bizarre how some Dems are reacting to this. Condemn the act and move on.
