I'm looking forward to speaking a this panel on whether AI can help 'clean up' scientific publishing. There's a lot of talk about AI and about research integrity, so let's talk about the intersection of the two.

Thanks. Yes, to folks from the southwest, our little Edinburgh wildfire must seem almost adorable. They put it out in a few hours.

I'm sure they'll be investigation how it happened, but the timing is notable. The Fringe has just kicked off and the city is swarming with tourists.

Arthur's seat is currently on fire!
It's not everyday you see a wildfire from your front door. At least if you live in Edinburgh, you don't.

IME the reason many companies are so committed to internal documentation is because that's how they transfer and preserve knowledge internally, which enables the next group of people in the pipeline to progress the work.
Companies that don't document well enough often struggle to develop products.

Also
My experience of pharma is research is often very well documented - to a higher standard than I've often seen in academia
Is it more accurate to say that if it isn't documented, it practically hasn't been done. Is the problem the assumption that publishing is only legit form of documentation?

From the point of view of institutional recognition and career advancement?

That right there is a bearded fireworm. Not to be messed with.
A bearded fireworm hiding next to a rock, waiting to sting the bejesus out of anyone dumb enough to touch it.

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie.....

In other news, underwater photography is really much harder than on land. That's why this one's a bit blurry
A moray eel, with it's head poking out of a whole in a rock off the shore of Gozo.

Today's master of underwater disguise is a cuttlefish. You can't tell the scale in this photo very well, but this crafty little mollusk was only about 5cm long.
Small cuttlefish partially camouflaged against the sea bed.
phillbjones.bsky.social
That's very kind. Absolutely, I'd love to read it.

If you need me during the next week, I'll be here... somewhere.

I haven't.

They are incredible creatures. We saw this one after just five minutes in the water. Only saw one, though.

Welcome to today's edition of 'Spot the Octopus'. The last one is a bit easier.

Taken in Xwenji bay, Gozo
An underwater photograph of and octopus well camouflaged to look like a rock among a small cluster. Octopus emerging from camouflage and moving towards a gap in some rocks to hide. Octopus squeezing into a small gap between a rock and the sea bed. Not camouflaged with the head and a tentacle clearly visible.

#EORC25 Ali Kay orcid.org/0009-0009-52... says that when the 2021 REF OA policy was introduced, there was significant growth in repository deposits, but only because they had to
I was a researcher in the US when the NIH launched their green OA policy years ago. History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes

Damon Querry is talking about taking Research Information Management data and making if FAIR findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable
I'm glad interoperability in research management is finally getting some attention. Too much data is locked away and inaccessible.

So these are the positive and negative associations that researchers have of open science according to Zuzanna Zagrodzka orcid.org/0000-0002-86...
Good to see growth in positive perceptions, but we're seeing the same objections around cost and career risk
My take: That's what's stopping us

More senior researchers are more familiar with Open Science - Good news
More senior researcher see Open Science less positively and riskier - Not good news
Hard to untangle if that's generational or if researchers are being put off openness as they gain experience.

Interesting talk from Alisa Niven at #eorc25 on behavioural science to understand how to get researchers to be more open
Used the COM-B model, which is apparently used for motivations for healthy lifestyle
I felt the model didn't pay enough attention to negative incentives

I'm attending the Edinburgh Open Research Conference today. The theme is 'Open Research: What's stopping us?"
I'm looking forward to hearing what the various speakers thing about that.

The closing debate of #easeeditors #easeconference @irfanullah.bsky.social fighting an uphill battle but doing a great job of arguing that editors should not worry about disinformation.

On the role of social media in science communication:

"We must use social media—because that’s where the communication happens."

A reminder that effective communication requires meeting people where they are.

This shows how connecting PIDs through open infrastructure adds value & makes it easier to find information about research, who is doing it, & where it's being done.
@morebrains.coop we've done a lot of work on this. Here's an interactive infographic about it. resources.morebrains.coop/pidcycle/
