legit wondered at first why would there be fahrenheit in Toronto.
philstr.bsky.social
Anyway, this whole masquerade of the past 24 hours has only reaffirmed my belief that there's nothing to do with the Americans, there's no reason to have any kind of talks with them. We'll see them maybe in 3.5 years. Until then, good luck.

I admit being a little frustrated at this notion of observing a difference of 0.1% as being meaningful given the uncertainty around these numbers.
philstr.bsky.social
Also the sole reason for his obsession about it

Mike Johnson: "If you're a young, pregnant American citizen women who shows up in an ER and you get treated and they pay the hospital less for treating you than some illegal rabble rouser who came in from some South American country to do us harm, that is wrong."

In fact, the US would be a better country if people on all sides of the political spectrum stopped seeing politics as sports drama, and instead took it as something serious that have direct consequences on their lives.

Perhaps, but it's not clear what point this meeting even had. Having Trump openly musing the disappearance of our sovereignty in front of Carney in no way shape or form helps him politically.
philstr.bsky.social
I fully agree with you that there's absolutely nothing to gain for Canada and Carney from this visit, and a lot to lose.

The repeated insinuations from Trump to wipe us off the map should have been forcefully rebuked. I expect political fallout on Carney for this.

The song "Pumped Up Kicks" is suddenly in my mind for some reason.
philstr.bsky.social
Exactly, there's no threshold when the reality is a spectrum of climate change.
philstr.bsky.social
The one thing about this that makes me feel like I'm losing my mind, is the timeframe.

Trump has just over 3 years left in his presidency. In just over a year, he will likely face a hostile House, maybe same w the Senate. That's a very short window of time. Are we not able to withstand this long?
philstr.bsky.social
They are definitely not, and are absolutely oblivious to this notion - not to mention they'd be so buried in their own set of problems it's not certain they could do anything even if they wanted to.
philstr.bsky.social
Yeah, I'm no expert but from what I've read, this whole project is as feasible as a Theranos offering.
philstr.bsky.social
I still don't understand what is the goal of making these trips. Play the clock on this guy remains the best play IMO.

Transformative is definitely a word that can be applied to Trump.

That's just it, it is a dying language that may or may not go extinct, but it's so isolated from other Francophone areas that French people don't really know much about it, if at all. So running into Cajun French is like running into something alien, it's met mostly with curiosity.

2/ and so they moved on to other points that they never really budged from (blue collar unionists were never progressive in the cultural sense), but on which they are actually quite culturally conservative. Thus why for example industrial areas went from left to far right.
philstr.bsky.social
I think it's more a Q of 20th century left wing political groups losing their meaning, due to what it fought for has either been won (industrial worker safety/rights, healthcare to all) or lost (blocking international trade/keeping manufacturing industry alive). Either way, the debate moved on. 1/
philstr.bsky.social
Cajun French is more like a curiosity because it's so foreign and a non-factor in the Francophone sphere.

It's frustrating when Americans of all political stripes are now turning on us.

Lmao all those Canadian car companies gonna feel the squeeze
atrupar.com
Q: Canadians are refusing to go the US. The numbers are down like 23% this year. What do you say to Canadians?

TRUMP: I understand that. And Americans don't want to buy cars that are made in Canada.
philstr.bsky.social
Do you understand that a lot of people in Ontario are hurting from American tariffs?
philstr.bsky.social
There's a big car manufacturing industry in Ontario that is struggling because of these tariffs.
