Most Canadians struggle with heterosyllabic /ɑ.ɹ/, e.g. they “repair” Tara /ˈtɑ.ɹə/ as /ˈtɛ.ɹə/. That is, they only distinguish /ɑ–ɔ/ before tautosyllabic /ɹ/, e.g.

That’s sweet. You can tell that it started out as ‘I’ before they tried to “improve” it. I do this in my emails all the time — I “improve” something just before pressing send, and later notice the resulting ungrammaticality and/or nonsensicality
