Yes it was quite annoying seeing that bright moon bearing down after the forecast for cloud. I suspect I eked out a reasonable number of species as it still felt warm and there was very little wind here.

The second Plumed Fan-foot for the North Hampshire garden last night, after the first only a month ago. Swallow-tailed Moth, Maiden's Blush and Light Emerald were notable late records amongst 72 of 22; which also included the second L-album Wainscot for the garden. #TeamMoth

I assume other candidates include firsts for Norfolk!

A very worn Flounced Rustic perhaps

Not an old chestnut then. I'll get my🧥

Thanks Steve. I very satisfying match of moth and background.

I'm no expert, but I think Hops also. They were growing all over the embankment beside the garden where I was trapping and looked a good match for the moth when I was looking for something to photograph it against.

One of the Flounced Chestnuts that was trapped during this week in the Cot Valley, Cornwall. This, together with Feathered Ranunculus, are a couple of resident moths that have been present on each night in small numbers, but both unlikely ever to occur in the North Hampshire garden. #TeamMoth

Brindled Ochre to light in the Cot Valley, Cornwall, yesterday. Their appearance here has been erratic in previous years, and this is the only one so far this year. #TeamMoth

Also adding to my fiendish moth jigsaw picture collection!

Five Convolvulus Hawk-moths to light in the Cot Valley, Cornwall, last night amongst 227 of 33. Other notable immigrant moths included two White-speck. @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #TeamMoth

One of eight Pearly Underwing to light in the Cot Valley, Cornwall, last night amongst 124 of 25. Likely immigrants included Radford's Flame Shoulder(10), Angle Shades(4), Dark Sword-grass(2), L-album Wainscot and Scarce Bordered Straw. @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #TeamMoth

Fairly quiet here so far, a scattering of the usual immigrant moths (Radford's FS, Pearly Underwing, DSG) with two actinic traps.

How many traps (and what kind) are you running this week?

Large Ranunculus to light in the North Hampshire garden last night, annual here in small numbers. A particularly monochrome individual lacking the yellow flecks more typical of the species. #TeamMoth

I guess it's whatever works for you. I often don't even pot the macro moths I want to photograph. I just place the egg box in a collapsible insect 'cage' straight from the trap, transfer the moth to the selected background when I'm ready, then take moth and background out to photograph.

Thanks Dave. Looks like you're about as close as I am to other recent records of the species, although the ones 10km to the west of here do look quite extensive.

Autumnal Rustic to light in the North Hampshire garden last night, only the second garden record. The first garden trap in 3 weeks produced 271 of 53, also second garden records of Clancy's Rustic(3) and Lyonetia prunifoliella. Deep-brown Dart was also notable after an absence of 3 years. #TeamMoth

Lozotaeniodes formosana in torch light on a Surrey Heath last night. #TeamMoth

Looks more hohenwartiana, than conterminana. For me there's too much dark streaking, the base colour isn't sandy enough and there isn't enough of a pale saddle i.e. it's not a classic conterminana. Looking online it seems there's much variation of both, I think not enough on this one to be sure.

Quieter times are a good opportunity to take photos of commoner moths that don't get a look in with large catches. As you're showing, common moths can be as aesthetically pleasing as less common ones photographically. Also there's some great backgrounds around in autumn.
