Metamaterials can create powerful lenses from tiny structures, now you can layer up to focus multiple wavelengths at once! Nice work @tmos-arc.bsky.social & EME team!

How to drive a tiny machine? No electricity needed, make it spin with a circularly polarised laser.
Ivan Toftul, Nonlinear Physics Centre, used resonance to enhance torque, surprised wtih efficiency 6x the 'limit'

Spacecraft could soon carry sophisticated polarisation-sensitive optics, using metasurfaces a tiny fraction of current optics. Plus they can analyse & filter all polarisations which boosts satellite imaging.

Lovely end of year lunch with the Advanced Materials Group @PhysicsANU. Tried an awesome new Ramen noodle restaurant (as we are a group that does a lot of Raman microspectroscopy!) AND we all got a group mug from Santa.

Perfect end to the year. Great peeps.

(Also occurred to me that its nice to see some females over here in Physics 🫣)

Cut magnetic noise by dancing with ghosts; New device measures rotation & magnetic fields improving sensitivity drastically.
Add alkali gas (sensitive to laser) to noble gas (invisible, like a ghost) pulse mag/laser fields & watch the magnetic dance, of precession
