I've entered my local market scene by just making friends and talking about unhinged, silly shit with people who are my age. But there's someone who keeps asking me how the markets went the minute it ends instead of asking me how I'm doing and other shit, so I have no desire to be friends with them.
I also just wanna add that if your thought line ever includes "how do I get 'in' with Popular/Successful Person" you're already way down the wrong path and need to back up
absolutely no one wants to be friends with someone who thinks like that, or their own mindset is already toxic too

same kind of thing with art or myriad other creative fields; people will come up and be like "how come all the Successful people hang around each other they must be excluding others" and in reality everyone was just teenagers in the same fandom at the same time and grew up together
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +
