They are one of my favourite wasps. The first time I saw them was 18 years ago with Douglas when we were on an FSC course at Flatford Mill. That was the trip that got him hooked on moths

Thanks Vikki. Im ok.He would have been so excited about all the interesting things which have turned up, although I still find it too sad to do much mothing. Good to hear about Beewolf- don't see many here

Thank you Don for your kindness. Yes, I think of Douglas every day, but today has been particularly hard. Tomorrow will be a bit easier

Four years ago today since Douglas died. We miss him every moment of every day. Loved so much by his family and many friends; a respected scientist and moth-er; a wearer of great shirts; and a Bellowhead superfan.

I remember Spangles, so showing my age!

😂I'd be filling boxes and boxes of them if I had!

One of the garden oaks is covered with galls this year, of at least three species. Other nearby oaks have very few

Small Coppers in the garden yesterday.

Glad you enjoyed it!I was there yesterday with an entomology group. We loved it but we're unlucky with cold cloudy weather so not many insects. We will return!

Glad to hear it! Don't want to let the side down

Bit of a treat today with a family of Spotted Flycatchers in the garden. Not sure if there are 5 or 6. Many years since we've seen them here

Thank you - a good team effort

Roe Deer just bounded past. I've been picking them up on my cameras a lot this year but rarely see them in the flesh

Good spot! Thanks Jocelyne

A Wall in the garden today, keeping company with 2 lizards.

I was going to trim back the vegetation around my garden sandpit, but 3 Field Digger Waps (Mellinus arvensis)are nesting under the vegetation so I wont'! They predate flies so plenty of food for their offspring. Doesn't do to be too tidy!

Why indeed. It's infuriating

Douglas would have been 29 today. This photo was taken on his MSc field trip to the Canary Islands. He left such a huge hole in our lives, which can never be filled #grief

3 Silver-washed Fritillaries nectaring on knapweed in the garden just now. Certainly justifies leaving lots of wild areas. Shame it's not included in Big Butterfly Count, but lots of other butterflies to include

Douglas had a visit from the police once when out trapping in the Welsh uplands. They thought he was rustling sheep. The policeman knew a lot more about moths afterwards!

This Meal Moth (Pyralis farinalis) was on the sitting room wall this morning (had left the window open). Think Douglas only recorded it once before

And, as if to prove the point, today there was a Melitta haemorrhoidalis sleeping in the garden Campanula today. I didn't have my camera because I've checked those flowers several times a day for weeks and weeks to no avail.

These creatures seem to know when you're camera-less. It happens often! Good luck with the hunt- I've never found it
